Challenge
Shade a new technology building while carrying Maya glyphs that reflect Southwestern College’s cultural heritage.
Solution
PicPerf glyph panels whose perforations cast the glyph patterns as light and shadow.
Southwestern College’s Institutional Technology Building in Chula Vista was planned as both a modern academic building and a place to carry the campus’s cultural heritage. Artist and art professor Mark Van Stone, working with Gensler, designed Maya glyphs for the new buildings.
Valmont Facades produced PicPerf glyph panels that shade the facade and reproduce those glyphs in the perforation pattern. As sunlight passes through the panels, the glyphs read as light and shadow on the building.
Gensler was the architect, Sundt the general contractor, and Burner Sheet Metal the subcontractor. The system is a custom solution in powder-coated aluminum.
