Challenge
Shield an open, campus-within-a-building academic workplace from the California sun without losing light or the campus palette.
Solution
Folded perforated aluminum panels on an Aurora attachment system that suspends the facade off the building face.
LMU’s School of Film and Television sought an open culture that let staff and students enjoy the outdoors while staying protected from the California sun. Organized as a campus within a building, the design uses circulation paths and communal spaces separated by glass, windows, and a perforated metal shield.
The four-story academic building needed a facade that could sit alongside the university’s existing campus palette and serve the art and film students inside. Perforated panels fold in and out across the face of the building, connected with an Aurora attachment system that suspends the facade off the structure. The screen balances light and acoustics across the multi-level interior.
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) was the architect, W.E. O’Neil the general contractor, and Plas-Tal the subcontractor.
